Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: How Your Diet Plays a Role

Tuesday, 18 January 2011 04:53 PM EST

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the result of high pressure on the median nerve of the hand which is responsible for sensations to the thumb and fingers. The disease is more common in females than in males. The syndrome brings about numbness and pain in the hand and affects both the wrists and hands.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be effectively treated through regular exercise and a healthy diet. Carpal tunnel syndrome exercises will eliminate the need for surgery. Carpal tunnel syndrome surgery is a painful procedure for the patient in terms of physical as well as mental abilities.

One should maintain a minimum salt intake in their diet when suffering from this syndrome because salt causes the retention of water in the tissues which makes them swell.

Patients with this syndrome should also avoid fatty and oily foods. These foods will cause the tissues to swell in a similar way to that of salt.
Having lots of vegetables of different types in the diet will also help curb the syndrome. It is essential to have vegetables rich in folic acid as these types of vegetables will help build muscles and reduce swelling in the tissues.

Having sufficient water throughout the day is necessary for the treatment of carpal tunnel. The water will act as a lubricant for the tissues and will prevent the friction of muscles and tendons in the body.

The patient will require an adequate amount of different minerals and vitamins in the diet. These minerals should include potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Along with minerals, vitamin D3 and vitamin B complex are necessary for recovery.

Fresh fruits in the diet are also essential for a patient with carpal tunnel syndrome. These fruits will provide the essential minerals and vitamins for the growth of muscles. Potassium is available from bananas which is important for the effective management of body functions.
