While Cymbalta is an anti-depressant drug that is used to treat depression and anxiety disorders, it is also used to treat fibromyalgia continual muscle pain or joint pains, and osteoarthritis pain. Additionally, it's often prescribed to diabetes patients who are suffering from nerve damage or diabetic neuropathy.
Like other anti-depressant drugs, a person under 24 years of age may have thoughts of suicide soon after beginning Cybalta drug treatment. If this occurs, one should consult their doctor immediately. In addition, if a patient finds new or worsening symptoms, they should call their doctor immediately. These symptoms include:
- Mood or behavior changes
- Anxiety
- Panic Attacks
- Insomnia
- Impulsive Behaviors
- Irritability or Hostile Feelings
- Hyperactivity
- Increased Depression
You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant such as Cymbalta, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Your doctor will need to check you regularly for at least first 12 weeks after beginning this drug.
While taking Cymbalta, avoid alcoholic drinks as they can increase your risk of liver damage. You should also be aware that Cymbalta may impair your reasoning or reactions so be careful with driving or doing other activities that require alert reactions.
Common side effects of Cymbalta include the following:
- Constipation
- Decreased Sexual desire or ability
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Dry Mouth
- Headaches
- Excessive Sweating
- Loss of Appetite
- Nausea
- Sore Throat
- Tiredness
- Weakness
- Flu Symptoms
- Abnormal Dreams
If any of the above symptoms continue or worsen, talk with your doctor and discuss whether you should cease taking the medication, but do not stop taking it until your doctor agrees.
In most cases, the side effects of Cymbalta are minor or considered less severe. With these, most do not require treatment or can be easily monitored by your doctor. The advantages of Cymbalta generally greatly out-weigh the less serious side effects and the side effects will fade as usage continues,
But, remember that you know your body better than anyone. If something seems "not right" after beginning your medication, report it to your doctor anyway. While it may not be a Cymbalta related occurrence, it's better to have it checked out anyway.
