Cruise News: 8 Onboard Must-Haves

By    |   Thursday, 02 February 2017 01:37 PM

A cruise is so much more exciting with the onboard must-haves some travelers might not think about before getting on that ship. The anticipation of heading to awesome destinations can occupy the minds of cruise passengers, especially first timers, while they get ready for the journey.

Cruisers should remember what they’ll need during their time away from home while they pack. There are also the onboard amenities that make a cruise fun and enjoyable. Considerations include necessities for casual times and ceremonial events.

For a good idea of what will make your cruise more pleasant, here are eight onboard must-haves to consider:

Latest: What's Your Favorite Type of Vacation? Relaxing or Exploring?

1. The right apparel — Bring along shoes for both casual walking and more formal events. While shorts and sandals are fun most of the time, long pants and socks may be necessary if your ship includes ice skating or other colder weather events, according to Royal Caribbean. Sweaters and jackets might come in handy for cooler nights.

2. Evening wear — You’ll want casual clothing for your daytime outings on board or touring port stops, but dress codes are in order at certain times. Some cruise ships require formal wear for dining at night, Cruise Critic points out. Elegant attire may be necessary for resort casual requirements. Check with the cruise line about dress codes.

3. Travel documents — Keep copies of these documents in checked luggage or carry-on bags, Travel Pulse advises. You might need passports, legal family documents, driver’s licenses, or other papers necessary when visiting various ports, depending on your cruise destination.

4. Camera and necessities — Photos are an important part of your cruise vacation. Bring along an extra set of batteries or memory cards for your digital camera. Don’t forget portable chargers or other devices for your cameras, smartphones, and tablets, so you can keep enjoying the sights.

5. Sunscreen, bottled water, and snacks — Sunblock is often a necessity for those long times spent on deck, as well as during excursions, according to U.S. News. Bring plenty of bottled water with you to quench your thirst. Sunscreen, drinks, and snacks on board are usually expensive.

6. Activities — To make your cruise more enjoyable, many cruise ships offer everything from pool games and volleyball tournaments to dance classes, art auctions, and cooking demonstrations,Cruise Critic explains. A gym and spa also keep you in shape. Cruise travelers can ask about these amenities for a better voyage.

7. Entertainment — This is among the must-haves for a great time on board a cruise. Ships may include singers and dancers who perform tunes from Broadway shows. Casinos with slot machines and blackjack tables make times fun between port stops.

8. Personal health items — Ships offer soaps and shampoos, but you might prefer your own, as well as body lotions and washes or hair dryers. Make sure you have the medications you need during a trip.
