Colorado can give your whole family a "Rocky Mountain High" if you plan your family vacation or staycation wisely. This state has plenty of natural wonders and a few man-made additions to the scenery that make it a nice and fun destination.

Here are seven great places to put on your itinerary:

1. Rocky Mountain National Park: This national park allows visitors the opportunity to explore the pristine beauty of the Rocky Mountains. It covers 415 square miles and offers numerous hikes with breathtaking beauty. With 300 miles of trails there will be something appropriate for any level of a staycation. While here, try visiting the Rocky Mountain Conservancy which puts together educational experiences for the kids and can provide bus tours of the park.

2. Estes Park: Estes Park is where you'll find the restaurants, lodging, events and plenty of family activities. Try horseback riding or biking around Lake Estes. There are many family and even pet friendly cabins for rent in the area and trolley tours around town are free for children under age five. A visit to the MacGregor Ranch Museum will give the whole family a chance to experience the homesteading and ranch life in the area.

3. Durango & Silverton Train: This narrow gauge railroad will provide an unforgettable experience for your staycation. The train has been operating since 1882 and takes visitors by steam locomotive train on excursion rides between Durango and Silverton. The company also will put together packages for visitors who want to experience the beauty of the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park or have the opportunity to experience some of the area mines.

4. Royal Gorge: The Royal Gorge bridge allows visitors to experience the highest suspension bridge in the world. This spot has many family friendly thrill experiences in addition to the bridge. The Royal Rush Skycoaster takes visitors on a free-fall 1200 feet above the Arkansas River. A zipline and gondola will also be available soon.

5. Pike's Peak: Grab your sweater in the middle of summer and head up to the top of Pike's Peak. The summit of this famous mountain outside Colorado Springs can be reached by foot, car or the historic cog railroad. It is a must-do for the Colorado family vacation or staycation experience and can accommodate visitors of any age.

6. Garden of the Gods: While in Colorado Springs plan a stroll through the Garden of the Gods. These sandstone rock formations will give your family the opportunity to experience the biking, hiking or picnicking at a slow pace in the beauty of these towering red national treasures. The park is free to visit.

7. Whitewater rafting: Whitewater rafting is a family adventure that your kids will remember for years. White Water Rafting can be tailored for your skill level and the amount of time you have available.
