Tattoos: 8 Quotes From the Heated Christian Debate

By    |   Friday, 27 March 2015 09:14 AM

While tattoos are one of the most popular forms of personal expression among younger adults, a debate among Christians about the permissibility of tattoos rages.

Here are eight quotes from the heated Christian debate:

1. "Tattoo of today can describe images that merely please the wearer, or have deeper meaning to the owner. Many Christians today are tattooing themselves not in tribute to a false or anti-Christian deity, but with love for the one true God and Creator. Many today utilize this permanent marking a way of giving glory to God." — Pastor Chuck Gerwig, Santa Cruz Bible Church.

2. You are free in Christ to be weird ... How about this one, tattoos? How many of you grew up in that fundamentalist church where they told you about the one verse on tattoos? Where is it? What book? Leviticus! Are these dudes in the front are twitching! Dudes with tattoos! Leviticus, Leviticus! Because a youth pastor said don't get a tattoo; its right here, don't get a tattoo. It's right here in Leviticus, don't get a tattoo. OK. But the thing is if you read the whole context it actually doesn't apply — its old covenant, not new covenant, so Jesus has fulfilled the law. Additionally it's talking about priest marking their body thereby identifying themselves with paganism, so I don't think it really applies. You can disagree with me that's fine ... Let me just say our position is this — tattoos are not a sin, right. Jesus Christ is going to have a tattoo — Revelation says on his second coming. It says that down his right leg will be written King of Kings and Lord of Lords, which will be really freakish for all for the fundamentalists to see Jesus all tattooed up." — Pastor Mark Driscol of Mars Hill Church in Seattle.

3. Eddie Smith, tattoo artist at Sacred by Design in Glenpool, Oklahoma says he does not have a favorite among Christian tattoos. "I always get asked, what is your favorite stuff to tattoo? And I always tell them, it's the one I'm doing right now. You can't do your best if you don't love the piece you're doing," says Smith.

4. "I think in tattooing you see specifically a response to the loss of identity that occurs in a world in which everything is gray; a world in which everything can be deconstructed, and (it) doesn't mean what it seems to, but can be a play for power. We stamp (our bodies) so no one else can have that canvas." — Christopher Baglow, PhD, reports the Catholic News Agency.

5. "If you received tattoos before conversion to Christ, then you have already been forgiven for that. On the other hand, if you have received tattoos after giving your life to Christ, you need to repent of this sin and not repeat it, under any circumstances, because it is considered abominable." — Lynette Shaefer on Rapture Ready

6. "Some people say that getting a Christian themed tattoo of a cross, or a scripture, etc., can be used as a witness. Perhaps this is true. But, we do not want to make the mistake of saying the ends justifies the means. On the other hand, it can be used as a witness. I suppose that the motive of the person needs to be examined and his/her choice is his own." — Matt Slick for the Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry.

7. "If you are considering the question, 'To tattoo or not to?' I think the more serious questions to ask yourself are: What are my motives for wanting a tattoo? Am I seeking to glorify God or draw attention to myself? Will my tattoo be a source of contention for my loved ones? Will getting a tattoo cause me to disobey my parents? Will my tattoo cause someone who is weak in the faith to stumble?" — Christianity Expert Mary Fairchild on About Religion.

8. "The Lord plainly, clearly, strongly, and without a doubt — condemns the tattoo. Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:28 Could that be any more clear?" — Terry Watkins, Dial the Truth Ministries.
