The Most Conservative Episcopal Colleges in America

By    |   Thursday, 07 May 2015 11:13 AM

When it comes to Christian colleges, woe to the traditionalist seeking a deeply conservative Episcopal college. There are ten Episcopal colleges of any sort in the United States in doctrine or politics. As epi-scopal means "looking everywhere," Episcopal colleges are tolerant of diverse viewpoints and traditions.

The University of the South (Sewanee), Sewanee, Tennessee

Some claim that Sewanee is the only Episcopal university in the U.S. It is certainly, as it claims, "the only university in the nation that is owned and governed by dioceses of the Episcopal Church, specifically the 28 dioceses of the southeastern United States. However, "Sewanee welcomes people of all faiths and offers a lively environment for active worship in the Episcopal tradition, which includes a commitment to service and an openness to intellectual discourse."

A Campus Reform article from 2014 notes that the school reversed an earlier decision forbidding a lesbian couple, who had been married in DC, to hold a commitment ceremony on campus. The liturgy will be "deviated" slightly to differentiate it from a traditional marriage service.

Voorhees College, Denmark, South Carolina
Voorhees' mission statement is so general that if it stood by itself you could not associate it with a particular Christian sect: "The College seeks to produce highly qualified graduates who coalesce intellect and faith in pursuit of life-long learning, healthy living, the betterment of society, and an abiding faith in God."

The two above were the only fairly conservative institutions among the 10 Episcopal colleges and universities in the United States.  The following colleges were founded by the Episcopal Church but for some, religious tradition has receded from prominence in modern-day school operations.

St. Augstine's University, Raleigh, North Carolina

Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York

Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut

Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio

Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, New York

St. Augustine College, Chicago, Illinois

Clarkson College, Omaha, Nebraska

St. Paul's College, Lawrenceville, Virginia
