5 Christian Alternatives to the Girl Scouts

By    |   Tuesday, 27 Oct 2015 01:47 PM

Everyone knows the Girl Scouts and the extremely popular cookies they sell. What people may not know is that the Girl Scouts have been around since 1912, and their mission, is to build “girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.”

Recently, this mission has wavered in the eyes of many conservative Christians.

As reported by The Christian Post
: “The steady decline in youth and adult participation in Girl Scouts is at least in part attributed to sex education decisions made by Girl Scout national leaders … Girl Scout policy on sexual morality, which focuses on self-discovery and protection rather than abstention, proves the main cause.”

If you are someone who is interested in finding something different for your daughter instead of the Girl Scouts, here are five alternatives.

1. American Heritage Girls

The American Heritage Girls are the most prevalent Christian alternative to the Girl Scouts and have recently had a large increase in their number of enrolled girls and press coverage they have received.

The organization's stated principles are “dedicated to the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community, and country.”

2. Pathfinders

The Pathfinders are an Adventist-run group that conducts similar activities to the Girl Scouts with the aim, “The Advent Message to All the World in My Generation” and the motto, “The Love of Christ Compels Me.”

3. Awana

Awana is a global ministry that has a focus on evangelism. The programs provided by the organization are for children and teenagers ages 2 to 18.

Awana claims that “Each week, more than 2 million children and youth, 330,000 volunteers and 260 field staff take part in Awana in 30,000 churches around the world.”

4. Keepers of the Faith

One can find Keepers of the Faith clubs in all of the 50 states teaching and practicing strong Christian values.

Unlike some of the other Girl Scouts alternatives here, Keepers is not a national, centralized organization but more like a curriculum provider for independently run groups. Churches and other parties wanting to start a Keepers group can purchase all its materials online.

5. Frontier Girls

The Frontier Girls, which has been around since 2007, isn't necessarily a Christian group, but seeks to " restore a focus on good moral character, patriotism, community service, and a love of learning that is being lost.

It’s for girls ages 3 to 18.
