Chlamydia, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is a sexually transmitted disease. Although the infection can be spread to any species through this family of bacteria, C. trachomatis is specific to humans. Large numbers of people are infected worldwide with Chlamydia. Most common Chlamydia symptoms include genital and eye diseases. The disease imparts symptoms to both males and females. The five major symptoms of Chlamydia are:
- Genital disorders are the most common symptom in female patients. Chlamydia in women is typified by muco-purulent cervical discharge, inflammation, and erythema. For men, Chlamydia symptoms include a watery discharge, generally white or cloudy in appearance, from the penis. Chlamydia symptoms in women can remain undetected for a much longer period than its diagnosis. Chlamydia symptoms in women can also comprise atypical bleeding from the vagina, abdominal pain, dyspareunia (pain during intercourse), pain during urination, and unusual urgency of urine. Chlamydia symptoms in men also include inflammation of the urethra as observed in 50% of cases. Other Chlamydia symptoms in men are a burning sensation during urination, inflamed testicles, and fever. Unlike gonorrhea, chlamydia discharge or purulent exudate is less viscous and lighter in color.
- Eye disease is another common symptom of Chlamydia. It can result in conjunctivitis or trachoma. The symptoms of Chlamydia can be observed to spread even to newborns.
- Perinatal infections are also a result of Chlamydia. As the name suggests, infants born to infected mothers are commonly infected with Chlamydia. For the developing fetus and newborn infants, Chlamydia can also lead to serious consequences such as premature birth and spontaneous abortion as well as pneumonia.
- Rheumatological conditions including reactive arthritis known as Reiter's syndrome and urethritis can be caused by Chlamydia. Reactive arthritis can affect both men and women, though it is a more common symptom in men.
- Lymphogranuloma venereum can also be caused due to Chlamydia. This is an infection of the lymph nodes and the lymphatic system. Chlamydia symptoms in this case include ulcers in the genital area and enlarged lymph nodes in the groin region.
