Chinese Air Force Drill or 'Top Gun' Scene?

Wednesday, 02 February 2011 09:52 AM EST

China’s state T.V. broadcaster, CCTV, has recently been involved in a scandal over allegedly broadcasting a fake news story about air force training exercises.

Tech-savvy Chinese citizens are accusing CCTV of stealing footage from the movie “Top Gun” to use in their news story about air force training exercises, claiming the images from the movie to be original content captured while filming the exercise.

CCTV has since removed the original broadcast as well as the link to the air force training story from its website.

This faux pas isn’t the first for Chinese media. They have previously confused a satirical article in 'The Onion" as hard news, and once used an x-ray image of Homer Simpson’s head as illustration of a genetic link to M.S.
