There is no mistaking Charlton Heston’s place in the hierarchy of Hollywood royalty. In a career that spanned seven decades, Heston was recognized and awarded for epic movies and recurring television roles.

From movies like “The Ten Commandments” and “Ben Hur” to roles in TV miniseries such as “Dynasty” and then “The Colbys,” the actor galvanized his place in cinematic history early and often.

Career Highlights
  • “The Ten Commandments” (1956)
Heston’s role as Moses in this high profile and well-known biblical story made the actor a household name. The role followed a decade of smaller roles and TV appearances that created momentum for the ascending star, and it meant that nothing was ever going to be the same after the Red Sea parted and Heston found himself among Hollywood’s elite.
  • “Ben Hur” (1959)
Heston won the Academy Award for Best Actor in another epic tale, this time as Jewish prince turned slave turned freed hero. “Ben Hur” won 11 Academy Awards, including best director and best picture.
  • “Planet of the Apes” (1968)
Stepping away from his string of stirring biblical roles, Heston hit another home run in terms of mass appeal and box office draw in this futuristic take about life after the end of humanity. His role as George Taylor kept Heston’s star shining bright.

Awards

  • Academy Award for Best Actor, “Ben Hur,” 1960
In addition to the 11 Academy Award nods and the best picture, Heston legitimized his legend for many by taking the Best Actor award in a field that included George Stevens, Otto Preminger, and Henry Blanke, IMdB reported.
  • Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, 1971
This Screen Actors Guild award is offered only to those possessing “outstanding achievement and the finest ideals of the acting profession.” Just 48 years old when he received it, Heston was recognized early on for his evolving body of work and his special ability to put people in theater seats in a way that few could equal.
  • Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, 1978
A humanitarian at heart who marched beside Dr. Martin Luther King and fought for racial equality in Hollywood before it was in vogue, Heston’s career was never far from the fight for social justice.
Claiming the Democartic Party had changed without him, Heston aligned himself with what are now considered more right-leaning ideals and spent the latter part of his career pushing for personal liberties in the form of gun ownership as president of the Nation Rifle Association from 1998 to 2003. He also served six terms as the president of the Screen Actors Guild, which was highlighted when the award was presented.
