Survival Prep: A Beginner's Guide to Canning

By    |   Wednesday, 15 August 2018 10:04 AM

Canning helps with short- and long-term storage and can easily be understood by beginners for survival prep. Canning can also become a skill that saves you time and worry if a natural disaster comes along.

Not only that, but survival tips that include canning also come in handy for lesser problems. You might just have some extra ingredients or food items around the kitchen that could be used for later. After all, who doesn’t hate throwing food away? Better yet, stored foods are also a great backup if you’re low on cash and aren’t able to go to the grocery store for a time.

Here is some advice for a beginner’s guide to canning:

Organize — You want the food processed in an orderly manner. Keep in mind every step along the way in the canning process, Survival Life explains. Keep the guidelines handy — from preparation to sealing — so it is finished properly.

Use the best canning method — Water bath canning works well with jams and jellies, fruit juices, pure tomatoes, and pickles, while pressure canning is mainly for lower acidity or sugar levels, such as meat, fish, or tomato sauce with peppers or onions, according to Urban Survival Site.

Check the seals, lids, and jars — Seals that are cracked or dried out should be replaced. A weak jar could shatter during the canning process. Lids help with refrigeration for short-term storage, but old lids may have weakened rubber. New lids provide safe sealing.

Work small — Beginners would be wise to start in small batches, perhaps two or three pounds of fruits or vegetables. The small and easy approach helps you to better manage canning. A recipe failure isn’t as big of a problem when working small to correct the malfunction.

Dry canning for decades of storage — Dry canning works for pasta, white rice, dried beans, vegetables, cereals, soups, cakes, biscuits, and other items, according to American Survival Guide. It provides directions on how dry canning kills insects or eggs and seals jars effectively.
