Hollywood Actors Who Support California Gun Laws

By    |   Tuesday, 24 Mar 2015 03:28 AM

California has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. This pleases many Hollywood gun control activists, who continue to promote efforts for legislation around the country to regulate firearms and the purchase of guns.

California received the top rating for the strongest gun reform measures in a 2013 state analysis by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore encouraged fans around the country to donate to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control organization set up by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg soon after the tragic 2012 elementary school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.

California already had the gun laws recommended by the organization, but Moore and other gun control advocates want all states to adopt similar laws to prevent gun violence. Moore also took the campaign to Twitter where she received a lot of criticism from gun control opponents as well as support.

Ironically, action star and former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger supported some of California’s gun laws, though he described himself as an advocate of the Second Amendment with responsibilities by gun owners.

Schwarzenegger’s character in “The Terminator” had an arsenal on hand, but the gubernatorial candidate Arnold supported the Brady bill and assault weapons ban. “I’m for gun control,” he noted. “I’m a peace-loving guy.”

Fellow actor Sylvester Stallone, also known for his action roles, stunned many fans when he became passionate about gun control in 1998, following the shooting death of friend and “Saturday Night Live” performer Phil Hartman. “Until America, door to door, takes every handgun, this is what you’re gonna have,” he said of gun violence. He also supported the ban on assault weapons following the Newtown massacre.

Despite California’s tough gun laws, Hollywood stars continue to seek stricter regulations as their concerns for the country intensify. Amanda Peet, Jennifer Aniston, Selena Gomez and Chris Rock joined mayors and congressmen in the “demand a plan” campaign after the Newtown tragedy. The plan called for national laws to end gun violence.
