Bushmaster on Gun Control: 4 Quotes from Heated Debate

By    |   Wednesday, 06 May 2015 11:48 AM

Bushmaster has become synonymous with gun control ever since Adam Lanza murdered 27 children and school staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012. For more than two years now, a heated debate has raged about the Bushmaster-produced AR-15 assault rifle that Lanza used to carry out the killings, as well as other military-style weapons and the public’s access to them. A group of Sandy Hook families even filed a lawsuit against Bushmaster last December, holding the gun maker responsible producing the weapon that was used in the students’ and teachers’ deaths.

Here are four quotes from sources on both sides of the political spectrum that reveal the intensity of this national debate.

“Wish she had an M-4 in her office”

Shortly after news spread of the elementary school shooting, U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) stirred up controversy with gun control advocates when he told FOX News, "I wish to God [Sandy Hook principal Dawn Hochsprung] had an M-4 in her office locked up — so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out and she didn’t have to lunge heroically with nothing in her hands ... But she takes him out, takes his head off, before he can kill those precious kids."

“I have to protect myself and my property’”

When San Francisco passed stricter gun laws after Sandy Hook, community activist Espanola Jackson filed a lawsuit against the city about the constitutionality of a city law requiring residents to store guns in a locked box and prohibiting Jackson from keeping a gun under a pillow while she slept, the Golden Gate Xpress reported.

“I live in a crime-ridden neighborhood — Bayview Hunters Point — and people are breaking into homes all the time,” said Jackson, a Bayview resident since 1948. “If they want to break into my house they are going to get shot. I have to protect myself and my property. I would have to get out of bed, turn the light on, find the key, open the drawer, unlock the box, pick up the gun and shoot. By that time, they would have gotten me, taken me out in my own house.” A judge dismissed the suit, though the NRA was considering an appeal at the time the report was published.

“Gun control stops gun violence”

In an emotional piece for The New Yorker that is light on fact-based reporting, writer Adam Gopnik argues passionately for gun control:

“There are many issues—the overwhelming majority—on which we need an ongoing public ‘conversation.’ On a few, we don’t. Gun control stops gun violence. Gun possession does not deter crime; it merely makes it more lethal. Making these inarguable truths into necessary law takes the work of persuasion and legislation and litigation. The mental work finished, the moral work goes on, often in modest invisibility. Every day, something good happens at the state or community level that makes getting guns a little harder—and keeps families a little safer.”

“The debate is over”

The Info Wars website summed up the perspective of many pro-gun advocates in a December 2014 piece. The writer responds to the lawsuit from several Sandy Hook families against Bushmaster for manufacturing the semi-automatic rifle that Lanza used in the Newtown shooting.

“So spare me the whole gun control debate,” Alex Jones wrote in the report. “It’s over whether these people care to admit it or not. Not only have they lost the debate from an ethical and constitutional standpoint, but the march of technology is leaving their sentimental ideals in the dust. There is no law or government on Earth that can stop people from owning and building the means to kill other people, and whether those people are good or evil does not matter. It’s simply a fact of life that can no longer be ignored.”
