Bronchitis: How Your Diet Plays a Role

Tuesday, 04 January 2011 12:00 PM EST

Bronchitis is caused by the inflammation of the mucus membrane, which lines the bronchial tubes inside the lungs. Bronchitis narrows the airways and causes coughing. It can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, but the causes may differ from patient to patient. Bronchitis can be influenced by factors such as toxin accumulation, diet, digestion, and stress and exercise levels.

Design a healthy diet for bronchitis and increase the intake of organic fruits and vegetables. This will help provide essential nutrients required by the body. Fruits and green vegetables help avoid chronic bronchitis. Fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants should be included in the diet for bronchitis. Strawberries should be a key component of the diet plan for bronchitis patients. Strawberries are rich in potassium and sodium and also contain calcium, iron, copper, manganese, sodium, and phosphorus. The vitamin C content of strawberries is higher than that of citrus fruits. They also contain vitamin B6, vitamin E, and A.

Increase the intake of fatty acids as it helps reduce the inflammation caused by bronchitis. Walnuts and cold water fish are rich in fatty acids. Fatty acid supplements can be added to the diet plan for bronchitis. Consult a physician if you suspect a deficiency in your diet.

You may be at risk of dehydration if you have bronchitis. Drinking lots of water will help the body flush out accumulated toxins. Juicy fruits like grapes, oranges, apple, and strawberries should be part of a healthy diet for bronchitis. A healthy, nutritious diet will keep the body’s defense mechanism strong.

Minimizing oxidants from burnt or fried food and maximizing the intake of antioxidants like vitamins E and C is considered the best diet for bronchitis. Vitamin C is affected by smoking. Smoking acts as a source of oxidants and those with bronchitis should quit smoking. Smoking irritates the bronchial tubes and lowers their resistance. A bronchitis diet high in antioxidants can help prevent bronchitis in the future. Berries, broccoli, spinach, and carrots are rich in antioxidants and may be included in the diet for bronchitis.

Not all home remedies work for everyone with bronchitis. You may need to try different things and find out what suits you the most. An all fruit diet for five to seven days, followed by a balanced diet, is recommended for those with chronic bronchitis. Include seeds, nuts, grains, and raw vegetables in the diet plan. An emulsion of almonds is said to be beneficial. Spinach and onions can be included in the diet for bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis hinders proper digestion of food. Carbohydrate rich food can cause flatulence, dyspepsia, and its intake should be restricted. Aged patients with bronchitis should have small meals at frequent intervals.
