The concept of a blood moon — when the moon turns red during a total lunar eclipse — is a religious one, not connected to astronomy or science in any way.

But at least one minister has connected the astronomical event to wording in the Bible, and he believes that the lunar tetrad, the four consecutive total eclipses in 2014-15, is prophetic for Israel.

Pastor John Hagee brought the “blood moon” phrase into common use with the publication of his book, "Four Blood Moons: Something is About to Change" in 2013. He told CBN News, "There's a sense in the world that things are changing and God is trying to communicate with us in a supernatural way. I believe that in these next two years, we're going to see something dramatic happen in the Middle East involving Israel that will change the course of history in the Middle East and impact the whole world."

Hagee and other clergy point to biblical references to astronomical events, such as Revelation 6:12-14, which says:

12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

The particular significance of this most recent lunar tetrad is tied to the fact that each eclipse occurs on an important Jewish holiday, Hagee told The Christian Post. During the last centuries, each time a tetrad like that has been in concert with religious holidays, something of significance has happened in the Middle East, he said.

An example would be the lunar tetrad in 1949-50 that came as the State of Israel was born, Hagee said.

"After 2,000 years, God supernaturally brought them from 66 nations and a nation was born in a day," Hagee told CBN News. "That again was a supernatural something that happened following the tragedy of the Holocaust."

Other instances, such as in 1492 when Spain pushed the Jewish people out and then Columbus discovered America, a safe place for them to live, point to “something that begins in tragedy and ends in triumph,” Hagee told CBN.

Pray4Zion.org said on its website that talk of the “blood moon” and its implications for Israel encouraged the organization to take a look at the issue.

“To our amazement [we] found there are very significant connections and trust that you will find this teaching fascinating too!” the organization’s site said.

Like Hagee, Pray4Zion found instances in the past when blood moons were linked to happenings in Israel.

The organization went even further back in time than Hagee, citing a lunar tetrad in 162-163 AD that occurred on Jewish Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles, just as the 2014-15 events do.

At the time, those were “coinciding with the worst persecution of Jews ... and Christians in the history of the Roman Empire. Within 3 years the Antonine Plague killed 8 million people, a third of the population,” Pray4Zion said.

The organization also quoted from the Jewish Talmud: “When the moon is in eclipse, it is a bad omen for Israel. If its face is as red as blood, (it is a sign that) the sword is coming to the world."

“Therefore: Lunar Eclipse = bad omen for the Jewish people and Israel; Blood Moon = sword coming; Solar Eclipse = bad omen for the world,” Pray4Zion said.
