Bipolar Disorder: Role of Diet

Wednesday, 05 January 2011 04:16 PM EST

Bipolar Disorder is very common in the United States; almost 2 million American people suffer from this disorder. Bipolar Disorder, which is also known as Manic-depressive disorder, is characterized by dramatic mood swings which range from extreme euphoria to depression. Since there is no sure cure for this disorder, it can only be controlled with the help of medication, psychotherapy, and a tailored diet.

A tailored diet is geared towards supplementing other long term treatments. It is essential to have certain enriched foods that can help maintain a healthy attitude and weight. One of the best inclusions in the diet can include foods that are enriched with nutrients such as fresh fruits, legumes, vegetables, fish, eggs, lean meats, soy products, and low-fat dairy. Including nuts and seeds in the diet may also be beneficial. This also ensures that the sudden and disruptive mood swings are reduced to almost half their frequency.

Maintaining a good diet for bipolar disorder helps the patient stay healthy, which is highly essential. Bipolar disorder can also be characterized by increased weight gain. Watching the caloric intake and regular exercise are highly essential to maintain a healthy mind and body.

The diet for Bipolar disorder should not contain an excess of trans-fats or carbohydrates. One should also avoid eating food that is rich in red meats as well as saturated fats.

Including fish in the diet at least twice a week is also important. This could include mackerel, salmon, trout, herring, or albacore tuna.

A diet for bipolar disorder also must include other nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids which can reduce the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases tremendously.
