In the United States alone, approximately 2 percent, or about 4 million people, suffer from binge eating disorder. The treatments for binge eating disorder varies from psychotherapy to pharmacotherapy. Research has shown that almost 10 to 15 percent of marginally obese adults and those who undergo self specified weight loss programs or who enroll for a commercial weight reduction package are diagnosed with binge eating disorder.
People with binge eating disorder show the following symptoms:
1. Regular instances of sudden uncontrolled over eating, which consists of ingesting an excessive quantity of food within a short span of time. This could be the result of a lack of control. One tends to eat at a higher speed than they would under normal circumstances They also tend to eat even if they aren't feeling hungry.
2. Feeling uneasy or having a sense of discomfort after eating.
3. A singular symptom of binge eaters is their constant obsession with food, either a quantity of it, or lack of it.
4. Eating without company for the fear of being ridiculed. Purging, fasting, and over-exercising after eating.
5. Absence of any happiness or satisfaction after a meal including a feeling of concern.
Sometimes those with the disorder may eat in a state of semi-consciousness, while feeling sleepy, and may not realize that they are eating. Those afflicted require binge eating disorder therapy.
