Throughout his years of ministry, the Rev. Billy Graham has delivered many hope-filled messages through the lens of a relationship with Christ and in living a life of faith.

1. Whether it be on stage, at one of his crusades, or in one of his dozens of books, Graham has spoken frequently on some variation of the old adage, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going."

“Comfort and prosperity have never enriched the world as much as adversity has,” Graham once stated in a frequently circulated quote.

2. Oftentimes, Graham’s quotes are intertwined with other themes, such as courage. In another well-recited statement, Graham spoke on this very topic.

3. In a similar, related statement, Graham said, “Believers, look up — take courage. The angels are nearer than you think.”

“I've read the last page of the Bible, it's all going to turn out all right.”

5. Graham attempts to instill hope into his audience by speaking on the effectiveness of prayer.

“The most eloquent prayer is the prayer through hands that heal and bless. The highest form of worship is the worship of unselfish Christian service. The greatest form of praise is the sound of consecrated feet seeking out the lost and helpless.”

6. For many Christians, the act of prayer is designed to serve as a meaningful way of communicating with God, and Graham spells his belief out in this widely circulated statement.

“Being a Christian is more than just an instantaneous conversion — it is a daily process whereby you grow to be more and more like Christ.”

8. With regard to losing material possessions, Graham has implored his audiences to look at it with a far greater scope.

“When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost.”

9. Through times of adversity, Graham also has attempted to instill a sense of hopefulness by having a sense of humor.

“A keen sense of humor helps us to overlook the unbecoming, understand the unconventional, tolerate the unpleasant, overcome the unexpected, and outlast the unbearable.”

10. The Bible speaks oftentimes of happiness — a reactive moment to a specific circumstance — versus the act of faith known as joyfulness. Graham, too, has attempted to share hope-filled quotes on that distinction.

“The happiness which brings enduring worth to life is not the superficial happiness that is dependent on circumstances. It is the happiness and contentment that fills the soul even in the midst of the most distressing circumstances and the most bitter environment.”
