South Carolina, one of the 13 original colonies of the United States, has a population of 4.77 million people with a median income of $44,163. There are 395 cities in the Palmetto State, the largest of which is Columbia.

Columbia is the capital city of South Carolina and was named after Christopher Columbus. It is located 13 miles northwest of South Carolina's geographic center and lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Saluda and the Broad, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River.

Columbia is the home of South Carolina’s largest university, the University of South Carolina. Rich with history, the city was the location of the South Carolina Secession Convention in 1860, and was the first state to leave the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.

Today the city is a Southern tourist draw, with a lush 170-acre zoo and botanical garden, the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, among the many places that attract visitors.
