Beth Moore Quotes on Faith: 10 Memorable Statements from the Christian Evangelist

Christian evangelist Beth Moore’s roots are in the Baptist church, but her views of faith cover anyone seeking God in their lives. Here are 10 memorable statements from her:

SPECIAL: Prayer Changes Your Brain in 4 Amazing Ways

1. Responding to a commenter on her Living Proof Ministries blog who was taking her to task for saying God gave her a vision for unity among Christians: “I, like most of us, do not believe that any denomination is saved. I believe individuals are and that they are saved one way only and that is through the blood of Christ Jesus. It is the gift of grace and not a result of works, as Ephesians 2 so clearly tells us.”

2. Responding obliquely to critics in comment section of her blog: “I believe God can be more willing to reveal Himself in our day than some of my brothers and sisters do. I believe the New Testament well supports such a stand. It is easier and more controllable and comfortable just to say that He does not and it cuts out so much of the risk but I don’t believe we can control the Holy Spirit like that without ultimately quenching Him.”

3. Email purportedly from Moore to “Jessica,”, a young woman who criticized her for claiming God spoke to her – quoted on “Pulpit and Pen,” a website critical of her: “Have there been times when you felt like God was leading you – not in audible words, but in a strong move of His Holy Spirit on your heart with your Bible wide open – to share something He had impressed on you with your group? Your sincere answer might be no. But if it is yes, would you not have felt that it was very possible that the Holy Spirit had been speaking to you? Not audibly of course. Speaking to your heart.”

4. Speaking again to “Jessica,” Moore talked of her own early faith: “As a young 27-year-old so in love with Jesus and so in love with the Scriptures, I was taught a very specific doctrine of faith and interpretation of the Scriptures. I truly believed that anyone who did not believe exactly that same way was dead wrong. I came to discover over the years that godly people who also loved the Bible like I did interpreted some verses and doctrines differently. There are still many I don't agree with but, with some, I do at least see in Scripture where they are coming from.”

5. Moore is criticized frequently for claiming to experience direct messages from God. In her second e-mail response to “Jessica,” she says it’s more of a strong impression: 'No, I have never heard a single audible word from God and have said that often. But I have at times been so heavily impressed by Him on my heart that I had a very strong sense of what He was intending to get across to me. In sharing it, I used regular language - words - as people often do, to express those strong impressions that came with the pressing of the Holy Spirit.”

6. As with life, Moore says in the introduction to her book, “Looking Up,” a good bit of faith consists of just showing up: “I believe God has scheduled a time and a way for you to get out of your pit. You’re going to need to show up for it, though.”

7. In the introduction to her devotional book, “Praying God’s Word Day by Day,” Moore says there’s no special little pigeonhole into which one puts God: “The giant step in the walk of faith is the one we take when we decide God no longer is a part of our lives. He is our life.”

8. God answers your questions, Moore says in her blog, Living Proof Ministries. The trick is in knowing the right questions to ask: “Did God clearly promise in His Word what you are asking for? Then do not shrink back. Or is there a precedent in Scripture for what you’re asking in prayer? Then keep telling Him what it is, asking Him if He’d be glorified in granting your request and, if not, to remove or quiet your desire.”

9. Exhorting her Bible study members on memorizing Scriptures, she said in her blog: “God is after your heart, not just your mind. He’s not just looking for your discipline. He wants to be your desire.”

10. On the division between scriptural and experiential versions of belief – another area in which Moore takes fire from strict Bible constructionists: “I wanted them both. I wanted to thrill to the Word of God with everything in me AND I wanted to experience the presence of Christ as palpably as He’d permit me.”
