Beth Moore Fun Facts: 10 Things You Might Not Know About the Evangelical Leader

From a country hike in boots and pajamas to hating wet socks, here are 10 fun facts you might not know about Christian evangelist Beth Moore:

1. On her Living Proof Ministries blog, Moore said she’ll take a walk on her Hill Country property wearing her pajamas (“Otherwise, what’s the good of living out in the country?”), but wearing boots for protection against snakes.

2. Speaking of snakes, Moore said in her book, “So Long, Insecurity: You’ve Been A Bad Friend To Us,” that she’s adept with a shotgun. She managed to turn that into a lesson into protecting yourself and experiencing life, rather than hiding from it.

3. Finding fun facts isn’t easy, at least not in person. Christianity Today wrote of the difficulty in getting through Moore phalanx of image guardians to get an interview: “It was not easy to get there. Just as Moore's stories are at once personal and private, Moore in person is intensely friendly – and closely protected by assistants who allow very few media interviews. After several interview requests from CT, her assistants allocated one hour to discuss her latest book and ask a few questions about her personal life. Each question had to be submitted and approved beforehand, I was told, or Moore would not do the interview. Follow-up interview requests were declined. I was permitted to see the ground level of her ministry, where workers package and ship study materials. But Moore's third-floor office, where she writes in the company of her dog, was off limits.”

4. Moore described herself in Christianity Today as "fiercely and unapologetically private" about the topic of adopting a son for seven years and then returning him to his birth mother. Other than sharing his name (Michael), she offers few details in her talks, books, and interviews, other than to say that the boy had developed "alarming behaviors" and that his birth mother had "resurfaced, strongly desiring to reclaim her son."

5. Her Living Proof Ministries website says she was born during a severe thunderstorm in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Her father said, “The Lord brought her into the world with a drum roll.”

6. Moore said on her blog that she grew up in Arkansas, and handed out samples of popcorn and pop at the movie theater her father, a retired Army officer, managed. Sometimes she’d get to sneak into a showing with “pickle bag full of popcorn and a Dixie cup of Coke.” This, she said, began her “lifelong love for stories.”

7. Before she was at the head of a multimillion-dollar ministry, Moore said on her blog taught aerobics in a class at her church. “Christian Aerobics with Beth Moore” can still be found on YouTube.

8. Moore said in an interview in Christianity Today that her first Bible study was a result of students in her aerobics and Bible study class asking for “homework ‘like all the other classes have.’” She’s now the author of more than 20 books (published through Lifeway) and Bible studies.

9. Sharon Hodde Miller in Christianity Today said female seminary students take heart from seeing female evangelists in action. One student told Miller: “Beth Moore was my, ‘Wow, look at her, she’s a woman doing the kinds of things that I would like to do.’”

10. Among the 10 “fun facts” Moore listed about herself on her blog: She has an “addiction” to Ziploc bags, hates wet socks “more than anything,” and was the only one of her siblings to whom her mother gave birth without anesthesia. “She never forgot it.”
