Benefits of Vitamin B12

Wednesday, 19 January 2011 03:54 PM EST

The human body is very sensitive towards disturbances in its equilibrium. A balanced amount of vitamins, minerals, and other components of food are thus required in the human body for its proper functioning. Any health conscious individual knows the importance vitamins, especially vitamin B12, play in the body.

The health benefits of having a balanced B12 diet are so great that it encourages people to include sources of vitamin B12 in their food. Eggs, fish, meat, and cheese are all rich in vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 helps maintain a healthy nervous system and adequate formation of red blood cells in the body. In addition to this, vitamin B12 helps in DNA production. It also helps increase energy levels in the body.

Vitamin B12 deficiency, on the other hand, hinders the smooth functioning of various vital life processes and metabolic activities in the human body. One of the reasons for neuropsychiatric abnormalities, which are fast becoming common today, is believed to be due to vitamin B12 deficiency.

Women also need to give prime importance to adhering to a vitamin B12-rich diet as deficiency is said to be one of the causes of breast cancer.

A vitamin B12 deficiency reduces the production of red blood cells in the body, which may cause chronic fatigue syndrome. Gastrointestinal conditions can also crop up due to this deficiency.

Children need to be given additional Methyl B12 supplements and Vitabase in case of a vitamin B12 deficiency as it can cause fatigue, palpitation, and decreased energy. A vitamin B12 deficiency can also lead to anemia.
