Barack Obama Signature Style: Fashion Experts Weigh in on President's Wardrobe

Casual wear has highlighted the Barack Obama signature style even in the formal approach. He seems to have the ability to put on a suit that also has a leisurely look, according to fashion observers. He also makes changes to his style that raise eyebrows for some while resulting in approval by other fashion designers.

Although there have been pros and cons about his choice of jeans, Obama utilizes a simple wardrobe when it comes to serious matters. He maintains a casual appearance by complementing a dark suit with a white shirt and pale blue tie or brightening things up with a red tie, notes the Askmen.com style site, which states “he has taught men how to wear suits again.” His soft-shouldered jacket fits comfortably and the trouser cuffs often break just enough over his oxford shoes.

He wears tailored suits from Chicago-based Hartmarx, and his choice has been imitated by many CEOs across the country. In the beginning of his presidency, the classy style of the Barack Obama signature look often included his two-button, single-breasted jacket with pleated pants and cuffs at an inch and a quarter. He is known to stay looking sharp when he needs to take off his jacket and roll up his sleeves.

Obama chose the double-vented style to update his wardrobe. That fits his slim, six-foot-one frame, according to Matt Landsberg, founder of Eric Finn Custom Clothiers in Washington, D.C. Side vents are traditionally European, but the side vent “steers him away from the stodgy look that many politicians have,” he says. The updated style provides a modern look while still maintaining a traditional appearance.

Obama stirred a bit of controversy when he chose a more casual tan-colored suit for a news conference in the White House briefing room. Fans called the style cool, but critics thought it looked terrible. Part of the controversy centered on the casual style of the Barack Obama signature appearance, which contrasted with the seriousness of the news conference.

However, some fashion designers found the tan suit a pleasant change of pace to cut through the boredom of politics. “You don’t want to look the same every day of your life,” said Joseph Abboud, chief creative director of Men’s Warehouse. Tan suits are even worn by businessmen in New York City during the summer, the time of the press conference, he pointed out. Kevin Harter, vice president of men’s fashion for Bloomingdale’s, agreed that the tan suit look is a “summer business.”
