Avodart for Prostate: Generic and Alternative Options

By    |   Wednesday, 06 Jul 2016 12:57 AM

Avodart, like its generic generic counterpart, dutasteride, is an alpha blocker that shrinks an enlarged prostate by inhibiting the chemical process that promotes its growth.

For men unable to take Avodart, there are alternative and other generic treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Avodart is in the class of drugs known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, which neutralize the conversion of testosterone into the enzyme dihydrotestosterone, which is responsible for growth of the prostate, according to the Harvard Health Publications.

Research suggests using Avodart may help reduce the risk of prostate cancer, but it is not known if the drug affects mortality from the cancer, reports the National Cancer Institute. Studies show a small percentage of men taking dutasteride experience erectile dysfunction and decreased or lost libido.

The drug may be involved in more aggressive forms of prostate cancer; and if taken by pregnant women could result in birth defects for male fetuses, according to Everyday Health.

Rare side effects include dizziness, heart failure, and swelling in the testicles.

So, doctors may recommend or presribe other drugs if urinary flow and frequent urination continue or get worse for men using Avodart. Alternative options include alpha-1 blockers, which target the urinary tract. They include the generic silodosin (Rapaflo), tamsulosin (Flomax), and alfuzosin (Uroxatral).

Combination prescriptions are sometimes used. Patients with large prostates may be given an alpha-1 blocker, which provides fast relief from urinary symptoms, while also taking Avodart.

When Avodart begins working effectively in a few months, men may discontinue the use of alpha-1 blockers.

Because of sexual side effects, some men take medication for erectile dysfunction. Using Avodart with the medication does not usually cause adverse reactions, the Harvard Medical School notes.

Certain alpha-1 blockers may cause blood pressure issues when taken with drugs for erectile problems.

Natural alternatives are also used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Research indicates that beta-sitosterol may increase urinary flow for BPH patients, according to Healthline.

Saw palmetto has also been promoted as an alternative treatment option, but results have been mixed on its effectiveness for urinary symptoms.
