The average salary of a West Virginia police officer varied based on many factors, including population and competition within the market.

West Virginia paid its police officers an average yearly salary of $27,000 (as of October 2015), according to Indeed.com, or about $1,000 less than the national average.

The job search website said, "Average salaries for West Virginia job postings are 6 percent lower than average police officer salaries across the United States."

However, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in May 2014 that average annual salaries of police and sheriff's patrol officers of the areas in and around West Virginia were as follows:

  • Morgantown, $40,930
  • Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna, WV-OH, $43,760
  • Wheeling, WV-OH, $42,700

West Virginia police officers with salaries in the lowest bracket — 10th percentile — in these areas earned as follows:

  • Morgantown, $31,060
  • Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna, WV-OH, $32,030
  • Wheeling, WV-OH, $26,600
  • Southern West Virginia nonmetropolitan area, $21,480
  • North Central West Virginia nonmetropolitan area, $21,280

West Virginia police officers with salaries in the highest bracket — 90th percentile — in these areas earned as follows:

The BLS calculated the above annual salary figures by "by multiplying the hourly mean wage by 2,080 hours."

Salary.com listed median salaries of police officers for the state capital Charleston ($46,208), for Huntington ($44,056), for Morgantown ($48,519), for Parkersburg ($45,540), and for Wheeling ($48,872).

According to the Charleston Police Department, all applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and must complete a 15-week basic police officer academy class.
