Attention deficit disorder is categorized into three subtypes:
 

1. Behavior marked by hyperactivity and impulsivity, but not inattentiveness.

2. Behavior marked by inattentiveness, but not hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

3. Behavior marked by a combination of the above two attributes.

The successful treatment of the condition is usually based on a combination of medication, behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, and skills training.

Psychostimulants are the primary drugs used to treat the condition. These drugs stimulate the central nervous system and have a calming effect on patients. They include:

1.  Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate, Daytrana)
2.  Dexmethylphenidate (Focalin)
3.  Amphetamine-Dextroamphetamine (Adderall)
4.  Dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine, Dextrostat)
5.  Lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse)
