Anxiety: Natural Supplements Help in Treatment

Wednesday, 12 January 2011 05:09 PM EST

The fast pace of modern life has led many to suffer from depression and anxiety. Yet, only one third of those afflicted with mild cases of both ailments are willing to get treated.

One treatment option is the use ofnatural supplements, which for the most part are safe and non-addictive. Here are some widely used remedies:

Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi)
is a well-known supplement, available as an extract, syrup, and as capsules and tablets.

Convolvulus pluricaulis (Shankhpushpi)
is helpful with epilepsy and in overcoming other forms of anxiety.

Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha)
has been in use for anxiety treatments for more than 5,000 years.

Use of Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi) in anxiety treatments has been described in Ayurvedic texts. The extract and juice of the stem is a boon to the minds of depression and anxiety sufferers.

Glycirrhiza glabra (Muleth
i) is a common kitchen herb, used to treat sore throat and coughing. But its root also is very effective for anxiety. Most formulations for anxiety treatments contain this herb.

Centella asiatica (Mandookparni)
is another anxiety natural supplement available in capsule/tablet and syrup forms. It is commonly used to relieve tension.

Passiflora incarnata (Passion flower)
has been used as a folk remedy for anxiety and depression as well as sleeplessness. Recent studies recommend incorporating it in anxiety treatments.

Matricaria recutita (Chamomile)
is a flowering plant native to Europe and Asia. Anxiety treatment formulations frequently contain this flower.

Hypericum perforatum (St. John's Wort) is a mild sedative, which has a calming effect on the nerves. It is a major herb in most formulations for anxiety treatments.
