The Al Gore global warming movie "An Inconvenient Truth" tackles the challenge of climate change in our modern era. The documentary uses images of the Earth collected by Al Gore and information about scientific research and the current political climate to show a dire picture of the Earth’s future. He quotes the humorist Mark Twain in explaining why misinformation is dangerous. Twain said, “What gets us into trouble is not what we don’t know. It’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so.”

Here are 9 key themes of Al Gore's global warming movie:

Global warming is real. Al Gore makes short order of the science of what causes the atmosphere to warm. He says there is no question that the earth is warming. He says warming in recent years is record breaking. He points to the 10 of the warmest years on record being in the last 14 years leading up to 2006.

Global warming is caused by human activity. Gore shows pictures of factories pumping out smoking gases and talks about how the greenhouse gases humans are pumping into the environment as well as the fires burning from deforestation are causing the warming.

Governments should take immediate action to stop global warming. Al Gore tells about his frustrations trying to work within the political system and not getting as much reaction from Congress as he expected. He says a LOT of people are going to be affected by climate changes due to global warming. Countries are using polluting technologies to produce energy and need to stop.

Scientists all believe in global warming. The Al Gore global warming movie points to the obligation of scientists to take an unbiased view. Gore says scientists have been ridiculed and discriminated against because of the “Inconvenient Truth” they may uncovered in this area of research. He claims that science has come up with a consensus on the issue of global warming, that it is real and needs to have action.

The effects of global warming are already visible. Al Gore draws attention to flooding around the globe, in Asia and India, China, and in the United States. He argues that it can be blamed on the increased precipitation and relocation of precipitation. He says increases in droughts and decreasing ice shelves at the poles are evidence of the problem.

VOTE NOW: Are You Concerned About Global Warming?

Al Gore has been an environmentalist for a long while. In the movie, Gore talks about his interest in the subject going way back to college when he had a professor named Roger Revelle. Revelle was the first person to propose measuring carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. Gore organized the first hearings on global warming when he got to Congress in the 1970s.

Al Gore is an expert you should trust.
One theme in the movie is the attempt to convince the audience that Al Gore is an expert you should trust. Gore spends a lot of time talking about his journey with the subject. He talks about his travels around the world and his personal discoveries, saying, “What we take for granted might not be here for our children.” He equates the Earth’s struggles with his own personal loss of his sister to cancer and near-loss of his son to a car accident.

This message is political, but it is also moral.
Al Gore says he has been trying to tell the message for a long time. He believes it is not a political message. It’s a moral one. “The moral imperative to make big changes is inescapable.”

We need new technologies and the political will to make it happen. It is hard to change our habits, but we need to think differently about technologies. Gore points out that U.S. companies are not doing enough, but he points out that we do know how to solve the problem. “The solutions are in our hands. We just need to have the determination to make it happen.”
