Acne: How Your Diet Plays a Role

Friday, 21 January 2011 11:53 AM EST

Acne treatments include many options such as surgical or skin abrasion specific treatments. However, diet plays an important role in acne treatment. The diet for acne eradication focuses on self-care including proper skin cleansing to keep it free of oil, eating a well-balanced diet high in fiber, zinc, and uncooked, healthy foods. Additionally, it is extremely important to avoid processed foods, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, sugar, and other food items rich in iodine.

Acne Detox Diets:
An acne detox diet is normally undertaken for a period of seven to ten days. This diet involves elimination of all unhealthy foods from one’s food intake. The diet consists primarily of fruits and vegetables, fish, and several herbs.
In cases of extreme detoxification, the diet may include juices and less solid diets. However, this extreme diet should only be maintained for short periods of time.

Low GI Diet:
This diet is known as a low glycemic index (GI) diet because it focuses on lessening gastrointestinal involvement in digestion by reducing the intake of carbohydrates in one’s diet. A typical low GI acne treatment diet can help reduce acne breakouts. This diet for acne eradication consists of lean meat, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Carbohydrates in the diet lead to production of more sebum, which leads to increased acne outbreaks. All sugary and aerated drinks are replaced with plain tea without sugar or water. A variation can be the addition of lemon to water.

Acne diets are an important means of eradicating acne as they treat the problem from within the body, reducing the chances of sebum formation in clogged pores. This acne diet treatment, along with topical and oral treatments, can help eliminate acne eruptions.
