Jimmy Fallon Pokes Fun at Electoral College Process in Golden Globes Monologue

Golden Globes host Jimmy Fallon on Sunday poked fun at the nation's electoral process, telling the crowd at the Golden Globes awards ceremony in Los Angeles, "This is the Golden Globes, one of the few places left where America still honors the popular vote."

Fallon, hosting the 74th annual awards show on NBC, was referring to the way President-elect Donald Trump won the general election in November - by electoral vote. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by almost 2.9 million votes, 65,844,954 (48.2%) to his 62,979,879 (46.1%), according to final election results from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Much has been made about the U.S. voting system following Trump's win, with some states questioning the legitimacy of his victory

Trump said he could have won the popular vote, too, had he focused on doing so.

"I would have done even better in the election, if that is possible, if the winner was based on popular vote - but would campaign differently," he tweeted more than six weeks after the election.

Fallon also compared Trump to the belligerent teenage king Joffrey of "Games of Thrones."

Hugh Laurie, who won the award for best supporting actor in a series, limited series or TV movie winner for his role in "The Night Manager," in his acceptance speech also took a dig at Trump.

"Thank you first of all to the Hollywood foreign press association, for this amazing honor. I suppose it's made more amazing by the fact that I'll be able to say I won this at the last ever Golden Globes," he said. "I don't mean to be gloomy. It's just that it has the words "Hollywood," "Foreign," and "Press" in the title. I also think that to some Republicans, even the word "Association" is slightly sketchy."
