Former Kansas Senator Bob Dole was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal Wednesday afternoon. It is the highest award to be bestowed by this nation on a civilian. One can only wonder what course American history would have taken had Dole won the presidency in his bid back in 1996. The wounded WWII soldier, statesman, and patriot is a tribute to a generation of Americans who deserve all the honor and respect this nation can afford them.
Back to present day, Washington and the brewing legal problems many big city mayors may be facing with their sanctuary city status for illegal aliens. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is taking the matter seriously and is backed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice.
It seems the illegality of these rogue mayors flies in defiance of federal law and the stark fact that illegal alien means just that. The majority of American citizens have grown weary of liberal mayors flaunting the law from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Chicago and New York City.
Ironically, these very same mayors consistently request more federal taxpayer dollars to fight crime, yet refuse to assist the attorney general in rounding up MS-13 gang members and illegal aliens for deportation. They are endangering every law-abiding citizen of their various cities with their politically correct ideology.
Under section 8 USC 134 of the federal immigration law passed in 1952, individuals can be charged and deported for being in this country illegally. That is the law. It appears that DHS Secretary Nielsen is serious about charging city mayors, police chiefs, or city council presidents for refusal to enforce federal laws.
Is this a bluff? It is a certainty that if she acts on her words, the practice would stop within the month. Secretary Nielsen said Tuesday her department has requested federal prosecutors to look into leveling criminal charges against sanctuary cities. That means if they fail to cooperate in federal deportation efforts, the next stop is a courtroom and possible jail time.
Her efforts come mere weeks after California, through its liberal governor Jerry Brown, declared the state a “sanctuary state.” Nielsen told a Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, “The Department of Justice is reviewing what avenues may be available.”
The DHS secretary has the law on her side. She is also backed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan. He has reiterated her complaint that sanctuary city policies put entire communities at risk, as well as the officers assigned to enforce existing laws.
The reality is that the Democratic Party has made the decision to protect people illegally in this country as a method of building their base of political support. Instead of changing the laws through legal means available, they have chosen to make it political.
For those Americans who object to this practice, it is the common occurrence for their views to be labeled racist or outright bigotry. But many lawmakers have chosen to forsake the job they were elected to do and bypass the complexities of changing current law. Many simply know no other route than street protest and open ridicule.
Americans should remember a great statesman like Robert Dole on his day to be honored. He was one of the last lawmakers this country has been fortunate to have who understood the rule of law and how to reach across the aisle to get things done for this country.
