Facing the Truth About Abortion

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said that he changed the terms of his support for a controversial GOP-sponsored mandatory ultrasound bill because he didn't realize that the law would require an invasive procedure called a transvaginal ultrasound.

Instead, he and other Republican lawmakers rewrote the bill to mandate women have regular noninvasive abdominal ultrasounds before an abortion.

Democratic lawmakers were not satisfied by this compromise.

We can learn a few things from the hysteria generated by the legislation. First, it is clear that Democrats don't want women having abortions with informed consent. Talk about treating women with disrespect. What is the real reason for not supporting a bill calling for a woman to actually see that her baby is not the Planned Parenthood image of "tissue"?

My sentiment is that any woman ready to permit the removal of her baby from her womb ought to have to look it in the eye first.

But the law doesn't mandate she has to look. The law doesn't require her to listen to her baby’s heartbeat. The law doesn't demand she have pity on the helpless child in her womb.

The law simply gives the woman — the mother — the opportunity to see exactly what she is doing.

The real problem is that people don't want to take responsibility for what they are actually doing, which is taking a life.

Why is it wrong to "upset" a woman, a mother, when the life of an innocent hangs in the balance? No one is taking away her legal right to end that life. Bills like that in Virginia simply ask a woman to make informed consent meaningful by facing the truth.

From more than three decades of listening to women's stories on my radio programs, it has been very clear to me that most of the abortions are knee-jerk and impulsive.

The mother often faces pressure from a man who likes the sex but doesn’t desire fatherhood. I don't believe I would have gotten so many calls from women who suffer greatly years, even decades, after an abortion if that decision were rationally formulated. So many pregnant women get scared and just want to make the problem, whatever it is, go away. That makes abortion perfect.

Women hear from feminists all the time about their reproductive rights and even believe they're doing something noble for the sisterhood by having an abortion.

Give me a break.
