Abortion Claiming Young Lives

Today is a rainy day in Atlanta, and like the song says, "I feel like its raining all over the world."

As my friends Dr. Day Gardner of the National Black Prolife Union and Pastor Walter Moss of the National Black Prolife Coalition join the funeral march of Lakisha Wilson who died at the Preterm Abortion Clinic in Ohio, I'm praying that God will comfort her family as well as bring justice for all mothers and their babies, all victims of abortion.

Lakisha's family is still reeling in shock over the her late-term abortion and consequent death at the Preterm Abortion Clinic in Cleveland. Although she reportedly died on the day of her abortion, her body was kept on life support for days pending harvesting of her organs. They didn't value her life and her child's, but they wanted her remains. Horrendous.

Commenting on the death of Lakisha Wilson, 22,  Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said: “A law banning abortion past 20 gestational weeks could have saved Lakisha. Such a law is meant to protect unborn children from the brutal and painful death of a dismemberment abortion; but it also would save the young mothers who are often butchered during this procedure. Lakisha Wilson had her whole life ahead of her, but she died because our nation still allows abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy."

The Wilson family’s tragedy is the shame of our nation. Abortion is decimating the African-American community. Black women who make up just 13 percent of the population account for 36 percent of the abortions. And black mothers also are counted among abortion’s victims.

Lakisha Wilson is a victim of "choice," just like Tonya Reaves was in 2012 when she bled to death after an abortion at Planned Parenthood. Our women are dying and people like Nancy Pelosi are calling for more abortion. America needs to recognize it has a problem. Abortion is never the answer.

Janet Morana, executive director of Priests for Life, said "Americans are outraged when automakers and pharmaceutical companies fail to recall products they know are deadly, but that abortionists get a pass.

“How many dead women are too many? Four women that we know of have been killed by abortionists in the last two years alone,” said Morana, author of the book, “Recall Abortion.”

“Abortion is a harmful product that should be taken off the market before one more woman dies,” she said. “It is way past time to recall abortion.”

There are now hundreds of documented deaths of mothers killed by "abortion complications." Jennifer Morbelli, Tonya Reeves and now Lakisha Wilson are three women among hundreds, young mothers dead by abortion. Death by abortion is taking place in houses of horrors all over the world. Babies and women are dying. It is shameful.

Gardner texted me from Lakisha's funeral: "I am here at the viewing, funeral will start soon — so incredibly sad. They are showing photos of her life. Baby photo of her as a baby and also photos of her when she was first born. It's madness that these women decide to take a life and then lose their own. When and how did the disconnect happen? Two lives lost. Sad. Another newborn photo and photos of her a a young girl growing up. Sad."

Friends, we must pray, we must expose the truth, we must demand regulations of these butchers. We must not allow Lakisha's death to pass us by in vain.

Dr. Alveda C. King grew up in the civil rights movement led by her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She is a pastoral associate and director of African-American outreach for Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries. Her family home in Birmingham, Ala., was bombed, as was her father’s church office in Louisville, Ky. Alveda herself was jailed during the open housing movement. Read more reports from Dr. Alveda C.
