You can’t destroy football at the bottom rung; you have to kill it at the top. Like many sports, football has many layers of participation. You have Pop Warner, grade school, junior high, high school, college, and finally pro football. At each level, the number of players shrinks. In high school according to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS,) about 1.1 million youth play high school football. If we look at all Divisions of NCAA football teams, we have 896 teams with 92,642 players. On the professional level, the NFL has 32 teams with rosters totaling 1,623 players.
You may be asking yourself why does the Left want to get rid of the game? Every game is a battle in a war. You have offense and defense; one is attacking and the other is trying to protect its turf. Many think America is a warring nation, which gained world domination through wars. American football is the playing of games every weekend in which only the strong survive. As we saw above, it starts with Pop Warner and goes all the way to the NFL. If the Left is successful in closing down the NFL, then look for soccer, hockey, rugby and lacrosse to be next on their agenda for elimination. To answer the question raised above, the Left wants zero contact sports, because contact sports create aggressive people.
The Left also has been trying to ban football because it is a brutal game and they believe many if not most of the players have or will get serious injuries. According to Mueller Sports Medicine, 50.4 percent of all football injuries are to the leg and knee areas, while neck injuries account for about 4.3 percent. Add to the number the percentage of concussions at 7.4 percent and the head and neck account for a total 11.7 percent of all injuries. Not known is the number of former players who will end up with traumatic brain injuries caused by repeated hits during their playing days.
If you want to destroy football in America, you have to kill the dream of making it to the NFL. Currently, according to the NFL, 70 percent of all NFL players are black, and that is equal to 1,136 black players. The news media last weekend told us that 200 players both black and white took the knee during the National Anthem, or about 12 percent of all players. If you followed the news, the reporting bias made it look like a huge number of players supported whatever message action meant.
I'm not sure most of the 200 protesters could even tell you what they were protesting against at the game.
The Left wants to get rid of professional football because they can wipe out America’s game, what many believe has replaced baseball as the national pastime. The loss of this path to greatness for American youth will put pressure on the rest of the infrastructure at every level and also on football ratings. The Left has stirred the pot of discontent with the hope that the fans will get angry and not go to or watch professional games. The TV ratings so far this season, as reported by CNN, are down 7 percent. The pollsters, however, are quick to blame the hurricanes because people either were watching the weather or they lost power.
What the NFL is not telling you is that attendance at NFL games is down, and to try to fill seats for TV in some stadiums, tickets can be bought for as little as $14. If the Left can keep this protest going and can get more players to join in taking a knee, then commercial sponsors will have to think hard about pulling their advertising from the games in support of the protesters.
The intellectual elite don’t drink “Bud.” But blue-collar people do drink Bud and Bud Light. If the beer sponsors pull their ads, they risk angering substantial numbers of Bud drinkers, many of whom vote Democratic, but they still love their NFL games. We might get to the point that sponsors may have to choose between the fans and the Left agenda.
Now let's talk about the primary issue in this protest: the number of blacks killed by white police officers. According to the Washington Post, the number of blacks killed by police in 2016 was 233 or 24 percent of all people killed by police. However, whites accounted for 466 or 48 percent of people killed by police. The numbers say white people are being killed at a rate of two to one over blacks. This is not to say that anyone being killed is a good thing, but it is important to find a perspective. My question is, “How is the American flag or the National Anthem related to the numbers of black or white people killed by police?”
The American flag is the symbol for those 1.1 million men and women who gave their lives for this country from the Revolutionary War to the present fighting. The flag has been a common rallying point for Americans for almost 250 years, in good times or bad. The protesters tell us they are not against the flag. Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics for the song that was later to become our National Anthem during the battle for Fort McHenry, near Baltimore during the War of 1812. On March 3rd, 1931, President Hoover made the song the National Anthem, 66 years after the end of the Civil War. So again I ask, what is the objective for choosing the National Anthem as a way to protest the killing of blacks by the police?
It is clear that the Left has succeeded in purposely confusing the issues. Players, coaches, and owners don’t know what to do, where to go or not go, to hold hands or lock arms like a swim team. They have been brainwashed to act politically correct, but they don’t understand what it is to be politically correct about this issue. Pittsburgh Steeler tackle Alejandro Villanueva, a former Army ranger, ran out of the tunnel by himself and placed his hand over his heart during the national anthem. The next day he was criticized for what he did and in a tweet he apologized for his action. This is a man who is a patriot and one who defended our country, and he is being pressured to apologize because he put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem?
Here is the real conflict in my mind: are we Americans, and are we proud to be Americans or not? And if the Left doesn't want us to be called Americans, then what are we? This is all notwithstanding proper flag etiquette, if for no other reason than for the million plus lives given for that flag, and yes, I am proud to be an American.
