It's Put Up or Shut Up Time for Abbas and PA Leadership

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas speaks in the West Bank's Ramallah on Sept. 3, 2020, as he meets by video conference with representatives of Palestinian factions gathered at the Palestinian embassy in Beirut in rare talks on how to respond to such accords and to a Mideast peace plan announced by Washington this year. The Palestinian Authority's refusal to accept the reality of the Abraham Accords  could spell its downfall.

While Arab countries throughout the Mideast are warmly embracing Israel, the Palestinian Authority (PA) publicly condemns the Abraham Accords.

While Arab countries: Morocco and Saudi Arabia, are removing anti-Israel and anti-Jewish rhetoric from their textbooks, the PA continues to educate their youth by brainwashing them into thinking that Israel and Jews are their biggest enemy.

While Arab countries are embracing the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism that amongst other things states that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism, the PA continues to align with the Iranian Regime in calling for the destruction of the "Zionists".

The PA isn’t effective at much, but one thing they’ve become experts at is putting up roadblocks to making peace with Israel.

If the PA doesn't change their tune in the near future, they will be left out of the regional conversation and all of the mutually-beneficial opportunities derived from the Abraham Accords.

The biggest losers won't be the rich elite in the PA.

It will be the Palestinian people who continue to live in severe poverty.

I wish I could say I'm optimistic the PA will change their tune but I'm not.

One of the reasons is because the everyday Palestinian has no voice, power, or leverage with the political elite in the PA.

PA President Mahmoud Abbas is in his 17th year of a four year term.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Mahmoud Abbas and his ruling party haven't held open and fair elections since 2009.

Abbas is a de-facto dictator and the PA is a de-facto dictatorship.

Only the ruling class in a dictatorship have voices; certainly not the people.

So while the PA hasn't held an open and fair election in over a decade, the new Chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., seems ready to resume foreign aid to the PA.

In an inteview with Agence France Presse (AFP), Meeks stated, "So we may need to restart the U.S. assistance to Palestinian people, demonstrating that the United States is ready to lead again."

I appreciate that Rep. Meeks wants to help the Palestinian people, but funding UNRWA is not the path forward. UNRWA is a corrupt organization that has deep structural and ethical flaws. UNRWA should never again receive another American taxpayer funded foreign aid dollar.

Back to the PA, the United States government should not provide foreign aid dollars to a "government" that hasn't held open elections in over a decade and a "government" that has a track record of political malfeasance, corruption and scandals.

The PA has already shown the world what they do with the foreign aid dollars they receive from America, France, Germany and Iran.

They have used the funds to fuel terrorism, financially reward murder and enrich their political elite instead of carrying out the basic duties of a government like building roads, water filtration systems, energy plants, schools, etc.

The hope is that Congressman Meeks takes another look at what's under the hood of the PA and UNRWA, so to speak, before he sends another American taxpayer-funded foreign assistance dollar to them.

If he doesn’t, then he's not seeing this critical situation in the Mideast clearly.

Let me be clear: I’m not against the Palestinian people. Not at all.

What I am against is ... the Palestinian regime and their leaders because they have never been true partners for peace.

It’s my belief that the PA doesn’t desire to make peace with Israel like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco are doing.

As the great Albert Einstein once said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results."

It’s time for the PA to stop the insanity, hold open and fair elections and start writing a new chapter for their people.

If they choose to do this, they will find Israelis, Americans, and others globally, ready to take meaningful steps forward to provide economic opportunity for them --- something their "government" should have done long ago.

If they don’t, the future of the Palestininan people will remain bleak and they will be even further isolated from their brothers and sisters in the Mideast.

Thus, it’s put up or shut up time for the President Abbas and PA leadership.
