Abysmal State of the Union

Seven years into the Obama administration you would think that with all the “hope and change” that was promised we would be in the promised land by now; however, nothing could be further from the truth.

Just take a look around and you will see that the state of our union is weak and is desperate need of leadership and renewal.

Here are but a few of the issues that President Obama has failed to deliver on:

1. Economy/Jobs – Our economy is limping along. The stock market is fickle with swings, fits and starts. We continue on a path of unsustainable national debt topping 19 trillion dollars. Without drastic entitlement reforms, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are destine for bankruptcy. On the jobs front we have not even come close to the jobs lost in the so-called recovery. Many have left the job force all together, are working below their previous employment or are working several jobs just to make ends meet.

2. Inner City Decay – Our cities across America are facing high crime, incompetence in governance, and corruption. Don’t take my work for it. The New York Times reported on May 9, 2015 the following: There is a “culture reinforced by contemporary conditions like poverty, racial discrimination, chronic unemployment, single parenting and a chemically toxic, neurologically injurious environment, like the lead paint that poisoned Freddie Gray.” Add to this, 1 in 5 Americans is dependent on some form of public assistance.

3. Divided America – The president who said, “There is not a liberal America and a conservative America, there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America and Latino America and Asian America, there's the United States of America,” has acted to divide America like no other in recent memory. He has fanned the flames of racism instead of extinguishing them.

4. Obamacare — Many state exchanges have gone belly up. Premiums that were supposed to save money are costing Americans more in deductibles and premiums. In my case, both my deductible and premium have risen each year. I am paying $240.00 more per quarter in premiums and my deductible rose from $5,000 to $6,800. However, the coverage did not change.

5. Gun Control – A grand diversion from failed policies. NPR reports: “Since 1993, the United States has seen a drop in the rate of homicides and other violence involving guns, according to two new studies. Firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011," according to a report by the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, "and nonfatal firearm crimes dropped from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 in 2011.” The problem is not with gun laws it is with gun law enforcement.

6. Radical Islam – How can we defeat an enemy when our president refuses to call them by name? The entire Middle East is in meltdown under Obama’s watch. We have seen the birth of a new enemy in ISIS that has taken wide swaths of countries as their own and vow the destruction of America and our allies and are gaining strength. They have proved to be the varsity not the “JV” as Obama stated they were. As a result of a feckless foreign policy our enemies do not fear us and our allies don’t trust us.

7. Manufacturing and Trade — We no longer produce in America what we need to sustain ourselves. Like with oil we are a dependent nation, relying on so many goods and services from others. We import much more than we export. We allow trading partners like China to cheat and manipulate their currency without consequence. The playing field is not a level one on trade. We allow access to our markets when others restrict our access to theirs.

8. Immigration — The President as a candidate in 2008 promised that comprehensive reforms would be his top priority. In his Inaugural Address he said he would deliver on immigration reform that year – 7 years later and nothing.

President Obama has embarked on a strategy of ruling by executive order rather than legislation. He has clearly overstepped his constitutional authority and bragged publicly that if Congress does not surrender to him he has a “pen and a phone.”

As a result, the Supreme Court acts as a de facto legislature as cases of abuse of power come before them giving them the opportunity to make law and amend law instead of interpreting it.

Our nation needs to return to regular order. We have three branches of government that are co-equal. When one seeks to subvert the other, nothing works.

Today the state of the nation is sick and tired of inaction and division.

The 2016 elections cannot come fast enough!
