Map Publisher Leaves Out Israel

The promise to “wipe Israel off the map”, was originally popularized by the Socialist, Pan-Arabist, then Egyptian President (1956-1970), Gamal Abdel Nasser. Amazingly, and embarrassingly for them, HarperCollins has accomplished what Nasser could not. They have wiped Israel off the map, literally.

Collins Bartholomew, a map publishing subsidiary of HarperCollins, is offering an atlas designed specifically for their Middle East clients — an atlas which they tout as having “maps (which) give in-depth coverage of the region and its issues.” I suppose if one defines in-depth coverage as pandering to the genocidal fantasies of those educators ordering the books for their schools — that is exactly what this atlas does.

Worse still, when representatives of the company were confronted regarding their decision, they not only failed to apologize, but had the temerity to defend their actions. They simply responded, including Israel in its Collins Primary Geography Atlas for the Middle East would have been “unacceptable” to their customers in the Gulf, and leaving Israel off the maps incorporated “local preferences.”

I appreciate that all information has to offered in a culturally sensitive way, and that when it is not, such information becomes meaningless data that the intended audience will never be able to use. In fact, how learners metabolize the data with which they are presented, is almost as important as the data itself. It’s what distinguishes blindly dumping facts on people, and actually helping them to genuinely learn things. None of that is an excuse however, for lying to people simply because it makes them feel good.

In fact, for their next act, perhaps the publisher should issue an edition of their atlas which gets rid of all nation states in the region, substituting a global caliphate in its place. After all, there are plenty of clients whose preferences lean in that direction — so why not?

Ultimately though, the really grotesque part of this story is neither the pandering to unabashed hatred of Israel, nor the absence of even a shred of intellectual honesty. In fact, the worst part of this story is not even the complete moral tone-deafness to their actions keeping the publisher from simply apologizing when confronted with their decision.

The really disturbing part of this story is that in publishing this atlas, Collins Bartholomew became a co-conspirator, however unwitting, in raising up the next generation of those who will stop at nothing to bend the world to their fantasies. To be clear, that process doesn’t end with Israel. Just ask the armies fighting under the banner of Islamic State, the Taliban, Hamas, etc.

It’s not a big surprise to me that there are plenty of book buyers in the Middle East who will only purchase an atlas which has done on paper, what they long to do in reality. Nor am I surprised when a tiny, though no less grotesque, minority in Israel, totally refuses to acknowledge the need to come to grips with Palestinians and Palestine.

What surprises me, and frankly should scare all of us, is when otherwise responsible publishers can’t tell the difference between creating educational material that meets the needs of their clients, with pandering to those clients genocidal dreams — especially when those dreams will not be realized until we all live according to those dreams, and publishers like HarperCollins operate under their direct control.
