SUPPORT OUR TROOPS IN THE MORAL WAR
I’ve written, as have a number of others, about the all-out war raging in this country. It’s a concerted effort, organized and well funded, against the very principles and practices that have given this country its identity and strength.
For me, having lived through the happy days of the 50s, and through World War II and the Korean conflict —periods of patriotism and morality and universal respect for religious conviction — the current attacks on all these institutions and traditions is nightmarish.
Years ago, I read George Orwell’s “1984,” and doubted that the warped, inside out and upside down world he described could be possible in America. But now, we’re approaching it at warp speed.
The “thought police” are here, and moving into every area of our society. Big Brother government is not fully in evidence yet, but a couple of presidential candidates seem hopeful of ushering it in, promising that all our needs will be met and all our problems solved — by a bloated, all-powerful benevolent Big Brother government.
Meanwhile, multitudes of minority groups and legal organizations are mounting assaults against virtually every moral restraint. People who don’t want anything to be considered wrong, or forbidden, are finding lawyers and even judges who will agree with them and enact laws from the bench though our Constitution provides them no such authority.
While we properly are concerned about terrorist cells embedded in our homeland, funded by foreign enemies, and actively plotting toward our military destruction, we’re not paying enough attention to the domestic groups who are defending and promoting a smorgasbord of practices that will riddle and weaken and eventually destroy our country.
Growing numbers of Americans see this happening and are expressing concern. But at the same time, there’s a sense that this relentless corrupting and moral cancer is inevitable and can’t be stopped, or certainly not reversed.
But I believe it can. I still have faith that an aroused majority of decent, God-fearing citizens can stem this tide and reclaim our society. We need to know, and support, the front-line soldiers who have already engaged the enemy and are waging and winning significant battles! Let me point out a few of these warriors and some front guards of constitutional authority.
Two outspoken pro-family representatives in the U.S. Congress, Marilyn Musgrave of Colorado and Steve Pearce of New Mexico, have performed heroically in the trenches, helping secure many unpublicized pro-faith and pro-family victories; significantly, both are founding members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus. “Separation of church and state?” Don’t waste your breath. Go to www.prayercaucus.org and read all about it.
Recent victories these brave Americans have helped secure include:
Changing the policy that kept acknowledgements of God from being included on official congressional flag certificates;Reversing the policy of the Veteran’s Department that halted the flag-folding ceremony at military burials because of its open acknowledgements of God;Restoring the acknowledgement of God in the National Park Service display of the capstone at the Washington Monument;Removing the restrictions on what words military chaplains can use when they pray. Valiantly using the authority and commission their electorate gave them, these two have fought effectively to protect traditional marriage, limit judicial activism, protect the life of the unborn, and keep “In God We Trust” on U.S. coins. They haven’t won all these battles yet, just as our military hasn’t won all its battles in Iraq yet, but they’re on the front lines, advancing and retaking lost territory on our behalf. They’re taking heavy fire from the secular left, and we all need to come to their aid.
Marilyn is the No. 1 target of the homosexual lobbies. She introduced and championed the Federal Marriage Amendment, and same-sex activists believe her defeat will be a key public validation of their goals and hasten their agenda to rob traditional marriage of its God-ordained purposes.
Steve is running for the U.S. Senate, and many groups have targeted him for defeat in his primary election in just four weeks, rightly seeing that his conservative courage will threaten the left-leaning goals of the liberal Senate.
We need to keep these brave leaders in office, or even moving up to more influential positions. They’re not just representing their districts; they’re representing us! We need to vote for them by giving to their campaigns: www.musgraveforcongress.com and www.peopleforpearce.com. If they’re not elected and re-elected, we all lose.
And while I’m at it, let me list some other squads and battalions and platoons that are dug in and determined to thwart the social enemies and drive them back to the dark places they came from. The American Center for Law and Justice (http://www.aclj.org) in Washington, D.C., headed by Jay Sekulow, is defending our liberties and traditions in high courts, including the Supreme Court and continually confronting the pernicious, insidious ACLU.
In just a few months, Jay will defend our right to display The Ten Commandments on public property before the Supreme Court. They need our financial undergirding, too.
Judicial Watch, also based in Washington, is another strongly conservative phalanx of trained lawyers who are, among a variety of cases, addressing the complex issues of massive illegal immigration, insisting that laws are laws, and must be upheld and obeyed. In California, this group argued for nearly four hours before the state’s Supreme Court, defending the initiative overwhelmingly approved by California voters in 2000 banning same sex “marriage”; it remains to be seen whether the voters or the same-sex advocates will prevail. But udicial Watch (http://www.judicialwatch.org) is fighting for us.
There are many others, individuals and organizations. So like our early National Guard, volunteer soldiers, they are doing everything they can to preserve our traditions and our very liberties. They’re defending our freedoms, our constitutional rights and privileges.
And we need to hold up their arms. Encourage and help them. Contribute to their cause. Our cause. As a nation, we can lose it all, just allow dissidents and rebels and fifth columnists to dissolve everything our founding fathers created for us. Or, like them, we can resolve to defend it all and preserve it for the generations to come.
