Dear fool,
Please don’t misunderstand me; I’m not addressing you in sarcasm, derision or, especially, self-righteousness. My life has been riddled with mistakes, foolishness, and outright sins. I’m no saint, but there is a redemptive feature I sadly don’t share with you: I believe in a God who understands my failings, and forgives me when I sincerely ask Him to.
No, I identify you with the Bible description, in the words of the psalmist David: “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”
This Divinely inspired proclamation does not convey God’s condemnation or absolute rejection of the unbelieving fool. The reverse is true: the same Bible declares that God loves every human being, and is not willing that any should perish. But these words do underscore your rejection of God’s love, the denial of His very existence, and therefore every benefit of His power, His love, His protection and provision.
And His guidance, His wisdom and knowledge.
That’s why I’m writing this loving letter to you, and all the fools among us. We’re living in terribly dangerous times. Our economy is shaking, we are being virtually overrun with aliens by the millions and don’t know what to do about it, our national stature in the world is being questioned, and we’re at war with deeply religious enemies who believe so devoutly in their idea of God that they pray to die — killing us!
As you must know, this nation was founded upon Judeo-Christian principles, by men who also were willing to stake their very lives on their belief in a God who rules in the affairs of men, who will aid and protect those who desire to live in liberty, Himself being the very author of liberty.
He created all men to be equal, and endowed them with “certain inalienable rights,” among them “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” These words, in our Declaration of Independence, also convey the absolute conviction that without God and collective faith in His provision, human beings have no claim to this unprecedented freedom — that they might dream of it, long for it, try to accomplish some of it, but with no authority for it whatsoever.
Ominously, you, my friend, and too many others like you, are now actively and aggressively denying the existence of God, and campaigning to remove any mention of God or scriptural reference from our buildings, our currency, our political speech, even grade school routines like voluntary prayer and our Pledge of Allegiance. You’re increasingly angry, and derogatory toward those who are believers in a Creator who proclaims in the book of Proverbs, “A fool has no delight in understanding, but in expressing his own heart” . . . and “A wise man fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident.”
You’re like the man who says, “I love apples and pears — but I want to get those trees out of my yard.” For your whole life, you’ve enjoyed and taken for granted the freedoms, even the privilege to spew your atheistic beliefs, provided by believers in God. But now you’re determined to erase the very source and accepted authority of those privileges and freedoms.
You’ve infiltrated our schools and the educators’ unions, insisting that only evolution — a theory — be taught to biology students; that history books should be expunged of records of the Christian purposes and motivations of our founding fathers; and that even pre-school kids must be taught to accept and admire homosexual life and practice — in absolute rejection of 250 years of moral tradition and commitment to Biblical teaching.
You’ve besieged and corrupted our courts, and much of our legal system, persuading like-minded jurists to hand down rulings that instantly become law, although the Constitution does not provide for that. You’ve convinced some weak-minded politicians to vote against amendments that would protect the institution of marriage and prevent desecration of our flag — all against the expressed majority will of the citizens.
You’ve taken one phrase in a letter sent by President Thomas Jefferson to the Baptists of Danbury, Connecticut — assuring them that “a wall of separation” would protect them from governmental interference, making sure no law would “prohibit the free exercise” of their religion — and you’ve twisted that phrase to support your angry demand that no recognition or mention of God escape the lips of any elected representative. All of this ignoring the historical fact of the frequent recognitions of God escaping the lips of the very ones who erected that wall, including Thomas Jefferson himself.
And now, aided and abetted by numerous dramatic television shows, your fellow-traveler writers and producers constantly assault religion, its leaders, and any and all scriptural prohibitions to deviant behavior.
In a recent episode of “Boston Legal,” writer/producer David Kelly clearly had his lead characters successfully defeat, in a court of law, Catholic denial of female priesthood! He made the Catholic leader look biased and close-minded, and had the judge rule that civil rulings (governmental) should take precedence over centuries of religious practice and teaching, and that “public opinion” should prevail.
So much for the “wall of separation.” Incidentally, that “public opinion” is largely yours, and not that of the actual public.
Dear fool, you’re plotting your own destruction — and ours, too. Like a deadly cancer, you’re eating away at the vitals of America, wanting to rob us of the very inspiration and foundation of our liberties, our character, and our strength. You foolishly insist that this people can control its destiny and solve seemingly insurmountable problems, and defy a murderous religious enemy, without the loving involvement of an all powerful Creator.
I pray, for your sake and ours, you’ll finally understand: “The turning away of the simple will slay them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil.” Proverbs 1:32, 33
Dear fool, I love you; God loves you. Please care for yourself and your country.
