The Democrats are still at it, trying to milk a scandal out of the fact that neither President Trump nor his supporters much care for leftist Representative Ilhan Omar or her socialist friends.
The American people have already made clear that they don’t really find this story very compelling, and all the absurd media coverage and talk show hysteria in the world can’t change that.
So Democrats decided they needed to up the ante.
Now, they say, Ilhan Omar isn’t just facing a president making fun of her and Republicans at a rally being mean to her; she’s facing threats of violence. The “death threats” that pretty much every public official and most celebrities in this country receive are proof, in their minds, that Rep. Omar is endangered by the criticism of her anti-Semitic and anti-American remarks.
That’s why Representative Al Green, Omar’s fellow “Squad” member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and other Democrats are making a spectacle of “requesting” additional security for Omar in public statements and letters.
Violence against public figures is a serious matter, and nothing I write here should be taken as making light of that. The brave professionals of the U.S. Capitol Police do a remarkable job of protecting our elected representatives, as we saw two years ago when Officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner literally took bullets to protect Members of Congress when a deranged leftist gunman opened fire at a Republican Congressional Baseball Team practice.
Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Al Green, and every other Member of Congress deserves the most robust protection the federal government can offer as they go about their work — regardless of their politics. If there are specific threats against a member, they should be able to request and receive additional protection where appropriate. Similarly, if any member feels they will encounter risks somewhere outside the Capitol grounds, they should consult with Capitol Police or other security agencies to work out the best protection plan possible.
But that is not what’s going on here.
Any real security planning would necessarily take place in private. If these Democrats were genuinely concerned about safety, they would never show their hand by talking about these vulnerabilities on the national stage.
The game that Al Green, AOC, and the rest are playing here is pure politics and theater. It’s nothing but an effort to keep the non-story of the president’s “go back” tweets going, transform a rude campaign rally chant by a small group of supporters into a deadly terrorist threat, and portray an absurd leftist fringe congresswoman as a victim of right-wing political violence.
The entire premise is absurd. The left has tried to blame President Trump for virtually every act of political violence in this country over the past three years. They should have learned their lesson when they tried to blame Sarah Palin for an insane man shooting Democrat Rep. Gabby Giffords in 2011. Instead they pushed that lie, for which there was never any evidence, until it got The New York Times wrapped up in years of defamation litigation.
The Democrats are still repeating the same talking point despite the myriad examples of political violence committed by liberal partisans. They’re ignoring the fact that the only shooting of a Member of Congress in the Trump era — that of Republican Whip Steve Scalise — was undeniably committed by a socialist Democrat. They’re ignoring the fact that Antifa terrorists — whom the Democrats consistently refuse to condemn — routinely assault innocent victims in public, and just recently tried to attack an ICE facility with firebombs.
If Democrats were truly concerned about the personal safety of federal officials, they’d be making a big show of admonishing their own thuggish supporters, not trying to turn a chant into a perpetual scandal.
