Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke thinks Trump’s America is comparable to Hitler’s Germany, that the Prime Minister of Israel is a “racist,” and that he, Beto, should be taken seriously as a national leader.
He’s wrong on all three counts.
Beto literally called Benjamin Netanyahu, the four-time elected leader of one of the world’s most ethnically diverse democracies, a racist on the eve of national elections in the world’s only Jewish country.
It seems that Beto’s decision to address Israeli politics is, like most of his public ravings, really aimed at President Trump. Attacking the president’s relationship with the Prime Minister of Israel, though, is an odd choice even for O’Rourke.
Perhaps Beto thought he needed a new tack on Israeli-American relations, which is an area in which the Trump administration has been wildly successful. He couldn’t very well advocate that the U.S. move its embassy back out of the Israeli capital of Jerusalem, for example.
Instead, the failed U.S. Senate candidate from Texas went after the very legitimacy of Israeli democracy. Netanyahu, Beto informs us, does not actually represent “the true will of the Israeli people."
As evidence, he points to Netanyahu’s election season appeal to a group of Israeli parties — not his own — to vote as a bloc if they want their votes to count. Beto is spinning this as siding “with a far-right, racist party in order to maintain his hold on power.”
According to Beto, Prime Minister Netanyahu doesn’t know what’s in his own people’s “best interests.” O’Rourke thinks Israel would be best served by the so-called “two-state solution,” which only 34 percent of Israelis support.
For a man who’s had so much to say about Russian “meddling” in American politics, pulling this stunt just one day before Israelis went to the polls was strikingly ill-advised. The biggest victim in this absurd stunt will be Beto’s credibility.
It’s not even clear from his words what Beto thinks is “racist” about Netanyahu and his forceful approach to Israel’s defense.
Every party in the intractable Middle East conflict, including Israel’s nearly two million Arab citizens, are closely-related Semitic peoples. Beto’s rhetoric smacks not only of hateful BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) nonsense about Israeli apartheid, but also Nazi “race science” about the “eternal Jew” being a race and not a religion.
Beto’s ridiculous attack on Netanyahu would have been bad enough if it didn’t follow this patently offensive comparison between the President of the United States and the regime that murdered six million Jews. Adding that comparison made his remarks even more reprehensible. The oldest pro-Israel group in the United States, the Zionist Organization of America, called it a “willful trivialization of the Holocaust” and demanded O’Rourke apologize.
Robert O’Rourke may not yet understand how national politics works, but his reckless and ignorant accusations are painting his presidential ambitions as completely unserious.
