The wife of a deployed Marine has been ordered to stop flying the American flag outside their California home because it violates the homeowners' association rules, Heat Street reports.
Heather Valenti moved into her Oceanside condo in April with husband Steven, who was stationed at nearby Camp Pendleton. He was shipped out overseas and she's been flying the flag outside the condo in honor of her husband and his fellow service members, according to the website.
But just days ago, she received a notice from her homeowners' association telling her the flag was in violation of community rules, which ban property in common areas. She was ordered to take it down immediately or risk "further action" from the association.
"There are other people in this community that have other things up in the same exact spot and I haven't seen them taken down — no consequences with that," Valenti said. "I don't want to be fined so if I do have to take it down, I would like to have everybody take down their stuff for me to take it down as well."
But she would prefer to keep the flag flying.
"With my husband overseas, this is important to us," she said. "We're American. It's not offensive to anybody. It's not even doing anything."
