GOP Rep. Jom Bridenstine is going to bat for Ted Cruz in a new ad defending the Texas senator's stand on America's security – and is taking a sharp swing at GOP presidential contender Sen. Marco Rubio.
In the campaign ad titled "Trust Ted" released Saturday, the Oklahoma lawmaker slams Rubio for a "despicable" charge that called Cruz "weak on security."
Touting his experience as a combat pilot for the Navy, Bridenstine defends Cruz's "stand against President [Barack] Obama's appeasement of those who threaten our security, from Iran, to [the Islamic State], to Russia."
He also blasts the Florida senator on his policy stances on immigration and the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the United States.
Bridenstine first endorsed Cruz for president in July,
the Washington Examiner reports, noting at that time the nation needs "a full-spectrum conservative that has proven he or she can fundraise, who has proven inside the beltway that they can look at the giants, face them down and defeat them."
On Saturday, Cruz said that Rubio's campaign was clearly “very, very dismayed” about the direction of the race and the fact that conservatives “are uniting around our campaign.”
Cruz specifically took on a television ad, paid for by a Rubio Super PAC, that condemned his support for the USA Freedom Act, which limited the federal government’s bulk collection of phone metadata.
“I imagine Senator Rubio’s PAC is trying to respond to the criticism that he has received that he is not willing to protect the Fourth Amendment privacy rights of law-abiding citizens,” Cruz said.
Cruz spent several minutes slamming Rubio to reporters, stressing the senator's past work on the bipartisan immigration bill.
“Senator Rubio’s campaign has been desperate to change the topic from his longtime partnership with and collaboration with President Obama and Chuck Schumer in pushing a massive amnesty bill,” Cruz said,
The New York Times reported.
