San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has agreed to remove wording from the city's official correspondence manual that disapproves of the use of the term "Founding Fathers," the Los Angeles Times reports.

"Suggesting that our founding fathers should be referred to as 'founder' is political correctness run amok," Faulconer said in a statement, the Times reports. "We are proud of our nation's history, and there is nothing wrong with referring to the founding fathers."

The correspondence manual had been recently updated "in conjunction with a $48,800 effort to create consistency in the city's visual image and communications," the Times reports.

The paper notes, however, that the rejection of "Founding Fathers" can be seen as far back as in 2008, when a manual stated that terms such as "pioneers, colonists, patriots, forebears" were preferred.

In 2014, the manual simply stated that the term "founders" be used.

The conservative Pacific Justice Institute had pressured the mayor on the issue and was delighted at the change of course.

"We are glad to see the City of San Diego revoke this type of censorship and PC insanity," PJI President Brad Dacus said in a statement on the group's official website.

"At a time set aside to honor American icons to whom we owe our constitutional freedoms, it is offensive and indefensible that the City of San Diego had directed its employees not to even mention the term 'Founding Fathers.'"
