Mia Love: Obama Campaign Promoting Racial Division

Thursday, 16 August 2012 10:25 AM EDT

Utah Mayor Mia Love, a supporter of Mitt Romney — and a congressional candidate — says she's outraged as an African-American woman that the Obama campaign would promote racial division by allowing Vice President Joe Biden to tell a predominantly black audience that Republican policies would put them “back in chains.”

“I’m not a victim — and Joe Biden’s comments certainly do not affect me,” Love told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Wednesday.  “However, I think it’s time for Americans to stand up and say, ‘We’re not going to allow this administration to divide us any longer. We’re not going to allow them to ignite hatred among fellow Americans.’ We've got to stand up and say, ‘We're not going to stand for this inappropriate language.’”

Love, who is running for Congress as a Republican, said she believes Biden's remark was specifically "meant to ignite hatred" and was done “for political gain.”

“This is not appropriate,” she said. “And I think it’s disrespect to the office which he holds.”

Comparing the Obama campaign to Romney's effort, Love said the former Massachusetts governor is concentrating his time on making “a clear statement to the American people that he is going to focus on the economy” rather than bash the president on a personal level.

She added that Romney’s choice of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate — who she said has been “a leader” on budget and economic issues — shows that he is committed to erasing the nation's debt.

“So I think there are a lot of people that are . . . understanding what Mitt Romney’s going to do and what his focus is going to be for the American people,” said Love, who will attend the Republican convention this month in Tampa as a Utah delegate committed to Romney.
