In an effort to focus on more news programming in the afternoon, MSNBC has canceled "The Cycle," "Now with Alex Wagner" and "The Ed Show."
MSNBC President Phil Griffin said that the reason behind the changes is to "build a new daytime lineup with the best live, breaking news coverage on television," according to a memo obtained by
The Huffington Post. Friday will be the last day for MSNBC's current afternoon lineup.
The lineup change means that four afternoon personalities are leaving the cable news networks, including Ed Schultz of "The Ed Show" and Krystal Ball, Abby Huntsman and Touré, who are all from "The Cycle."
"Cycle" host Ari Melber will stay on and serve as a chief legal correspondent. Griffin said that Alex Wagner will "play a key role in our political coverage as we head into the 2016 election."
Chuck Todd, host of "Meet the Press" on NBC, will host a daily politics show on MSNBC at 5 p.m. Disgraced "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams is also joining the cable news network to cover breaking news.
Joe Concha, host of "The Daily Wrap" on Newsmax TV, wrote about the MSNBC lineup changes that the network was planning last week in an
exclusive for Mediaite.
"I know you read press reports last week speculating about these changes," Griffin wrote in the memo. "I hope you can understand that we were not able to confirm at that point because we had not yet finalized many of the decisions I’m sharing with you today, and we hadn’t yet spoken directly with the people involved."
