Monday, 05 November 2012 11:16 AM EST

The next generation of Americans already owe more than $200,000 each just to pay off the country's $16 trillion national debt.

Every boy and girl under 18 would in debt to a total of $218,676 if the bill were to fall on their shoulders, an analysis by CNSNews found.

That figure exceeds the $130,000 average price of a private college education and the $173,000 median price for a one-family home.

The total national debt on November 1 was $16,221,685,381,838.28. There were 74,181,467 people in the United States under the age of 18, according to the latest census.

Since President Barack Obama took office, the debt has jumped approximately 53 percent. The website cited the Bureau of the Public Debt in its analysis
