Barbara Bush: 2012 Campaign 'Worst I've Ever Seen in My Life'

Monday, 05 March 2012 07:55 PM EST

At a Dallas conference of first ladies, Barbara Bush, the "Silver Fox," showed she's not one to hold back on her opinions.

Asked what she thought of the 2012 GOP campaign, she didn't mince words.

"I think it’s been the worst campaign I’ve ever seen in my life,” she said Monday at Southern Methodist University during the conference on the influence of the nation’s first ladies. “I hate that people think compromise is a dirty word. It’s not a dirty word,” she said.

On a question about the loss of civility in Washington, Laura Bush, her daughter-in-law,  recalled seeing bitter cartoons about Abraham Lincoln and diplomatically said, “You see that and you realize it’s just a part of American politics.”

But her mother-in-law disagreed. “I think the rest of the world is looking at us these days and saying, ‘What are you doing?’”

The two Bush wives also talked about life in the White House.

About 300 people attended the conference Monday hosted by the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

Former President George W. Bush introduced his wife and mother, telling the crowd, "Obviously, I don't mind being surrounded by strong women. I was raised by one, I married one, and I believe we're raising two."
