President Donald Trump's personal physician since the 1980's revealed that the president takes a drug that promotes hair growth, in a series of interviews with The New York Times.
Dr. Harold N. Bornstein, 69 of New York City, told the Times that the president takes finasteride, which is marketed as Propecia as a treatment for male-pattern baldness. This news explains Trump's low level of prostate specific antigen, or PSA, which is a sign of prostate cancer, but is also lowered by finasteride.
Although Bornstein has been Trump's personal doctor for decades, he told the Times that he has not spoken to Trump since he began his term, and that the White House has not requested the president's medical records or reached out to discuss them.
He also said that Trump takes common medications, including antibiotics for the skin condition rosacea, a statin for high cholesterol and lipids, and a baby aspirin once a day to reduce his risk of heart attack. Trump, 70, is the oldest person to become president.
Trump is retaining former President Barack Obama's White House doctor, Dr. Ronny Jackson, a U.S. Navy rear admiral. Bornstein, despite having told Trump's secretary, "I should be the White House physician," a month ago, told STAT News Thursday that he thought Trump should have a military doctor.
"That sounds perfect to me," he said.
