Donald Trump said Tuesday he would “seriously, seriously” consider jumping into the White House race if Rick Santorum wins the Republican presidential nomination.
The real estate mogul and reality TV star told
CNBC that he is a “free agent” after his “Apprentice” show finishes for the season on May 16.
“Honestly, if Santorum got it, I would seriously, seriously consider it. We need someone that’s really going to be great,” he said. “This is the most important election in my opinion that this country has ever had. Santorum is not the right person.”
Trump has endorsed Mitt Romney, and he said he hopes Romney will win the GOP nomination. But if Santorum gets the party’s nod, there is no way he can win the general election, Trump said.
Trump pointed out to CNBC that Santorum was trounced in 2006 when he ran for re-election as a U.S. senator from Pennsylvania.
“The people who knew him and the people who knew him best threw him out,” Trump told CNBC. “He flunked out of the Senate and now he wants to be president!”
